The Embrace digital storytelling
Community-based storytelling
The Embrace, the Hank Willis Thomas sculpture honoring Dr Martin Luther King Jr and his wife, Coretta Scott King, was unveiled on 13 January 2023 in Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States. We partnered with MASS Design Group and Embrace Boston, the advocacy organization that commissioned the artwork, to create an audio-visual progressive web app—The Embrace Digital Experience—for visitors to learn more about the sculpture, Dr and Mrs King, and the civil rights movement in Boston.

At the heart of the Digital Experience is a three-part audio narrative told entirely through the voices of cultural, spiritual, and political leaders in Boston’s Black community. The web app also contains biographies of local civil rights leaders, the names of whom are etched into the 1965 Freedom Plaza surrounding the sculpture, and photographic essays on a range of themes connected to The Embrace and civil rights in Boston.
In seeking to create experiences that leave a lasting positive impact on communities, we are both proud and privileged to be working with Embrace Boston to share their vision of a radically inclusive and equitable society.
